I just enjoy the fun of this movie and the dialogue is witty.Juneteenth, short for June 19th, commemorates the day the last remaining enslaved people in the U.S. In my mind, I have them getting together eventually but when they separate at the gate neither is ready, they must both stand on their own first. The ending is the best part, not a Hollywood fairy tale ending. What scares him is that Rita knows the truth, she calls him on it too. For me his relationship with his girlfriend and colleague is superficial and more of a mirage so the outside world can think he has it together. The only thing he is intimate with is alcohol, it’s always there when he needs it and never makes him feel unwanted. The relationship he has with Rita is genuine, he wants to be close but does things to distance himself at the same time. Yes, her husband is hurt, not so much by losing Susan but rather not having a child which is his ultimate desire.Ĭaine is just as wonderful as the drunk Professor Bryant, who seems to enjoy pitying himself. Her transformation is a slow process, you can see just how desperate she wants to be the ‘real’ Susan and does it without hurting anybody along the way.
Julie Walters is magnificent as Rita (Susan), she has so much energy and isn’t afraid to be herself, even when faced with losing her husband.
